Chris Torrance: Path

‘The Magic Door’ (Test Centre, 2017) brought together the majority of Chris Torrance’s published work from 1970, when he moved to Wales, up to 1996. ‘Path’ follows on from that, being Torrance’s own compilation of his later work, finalised in 2017.

Kim Taplin
‘Richard Jefferies said of the land that you need to ‘stay in it, like the oaks, to know it’, and this is what Chris has done, digging in to his still-remote Neath valley as few people now do anywhere. The result is a deep, intimate knowledge of nature that acts as compost for his writing, which moves outward from the minutiae of his daily life to scan the industrial world beyond, and back with a long reach through history and pre-history.’

John Freeman
‘The character humanises the landscape, and the landscape gives the character his larger dimension: so that, idiosyncratic and fallible as he is, Torrance’s persona, his consciousness, can stand for each for each of us: reaching into the real contexts of being human with an energy and grasp that proffer them to his reader, to share. Torrance enlarges and deepens the world for us.’

Will Rowe
‘Torrance’s poetry does not transform the mundane by ‘stopping time’ in the sense of selecting the content of one moment and raising it up above ordinary time. That approach makes a profit out of the moment which can then be spread over the rest of life like some sort of glitter, just as capital makes out of human time the alluring but parasitic time of money and commodities. Torrance’s way involves real risk: he exposes himself to the failure of vision, the sheer unilluminated plod of the day-to-day. A morality here, then.’
