Lee Duggan: Residential Poems

Lee Duggan’s Residential Poems are migratory and expansive, roaming between north Wales and fragmentary cities, dissolving the boundaries between spaces and species with their own wild music. A charged attention to ‘small things / in order of truth’ keeps language on the move in the pulse of unfolding lives, its tendrils extending from humans to plants to planets. This is poetry that makes an important claim for ‘a rougher garden / more undergrowth than / bird song’, pushing back against the violence of tamed landscapes to assert multiplicity and openness. A river is running not far off in the distance, under ferns and nettles, and these poems know the best place to get in.

‘the world is still open’: why not get out there with Lee Duggan? Here is a gritty, granular sense of home and place in a series of diverse, always passionate, forms and lingos. Especially powerful are the open form pieces where sound (‘stray rays seep storm’) and space interact with resonance. On this journey, the tangled roots of a life, womanhood, romance, ‘the contradiction of loving other,’ are interrogated with subtlety, depth and wit. ‘Langdscape’ (RDP) is a source of wit, witchery, and joy, ‘a cut up of cormorants and vowels.’ We’re left musing about home, both inner and domestic, and outer, the ‘refuge off the footpath’ where we enact our relations with land, water, mountain, our places where we walk, drift and settle.
