Graham Hartill on Rhapsodies:
Rhapsodies is a pretty wide book I think, a selection from a decade’s work; it contains nine sequences on themes as varied as visits to Neolithic settlements, my work as a writer in prison, and reflections on the work of the great post-jazz pioneer Albert Ayler. Supporting all of this is my understanding of Ernest Becker’s considerations of culture, power and mortality seen from a broadly Buddhist perspective.
Why the title? Well, I love the word, and I recently discovered it’s meaning as: ‘stitch-songs, improvised on various elements of epic poetry. An emotional, perhaps even ecstatic utterance.’ Perhaps it’s to do with times, or the time of my life, but I guess I wanted to include some passionate work on what’s important. Don’t we all?
My thanks to Tessa Waite for her beautiful drawings and all the other collaborators, knowingly or not, who have helped stitch it all together.
