always and never been<\/strong><\/p>\n i.m. John James<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n John, in the epistolary moment<\/p>\n of the perpetually unsent,<\/p>\n I headache today<\/p>\n slipping between the always and never been<\/p>\n <\/p>\n as an unusual was<\/p>\n – my dripping, viral self<\/p>\n high on Reckoning with the Dead,<\/p>\n on an outsized Rutland bed –<\/p>\n ways us towards evening,<\/p>\n day\u2019s climbdown,<\/p>\n an act of brinkmanship.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n So, let\u2019s roll with it<\/p>\n out to shape, seascaped<\/p>\n on the outer-rim of circles and cycles<\/p>\n unfit for Dante \u2013<\/p>\n what city isn\u2019t<\/em> unreal<\/p>\n in the consequences it bites<\/p>\n into residents\u2019 dreaming flesh,<\/p>\n official and unofficial issue.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I own so little thought<\/p>\n and shan\u2019t resort to pilfering H\u00f6lderlin<\/p>\n when, tilted out of sorts,<\/p>\n I play the ear\u2019s organ<\/p>\n flapping at the side of my head<\/p>\n like a sail.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Simon Perril\u2019s poetry publications include The Slip<\/i> (Shearsman 2020), In the Final Year of My 40s <\/i>(Shearsman 2018), Beneath<\/i>(Shearsman 2015), and Archilochus on the Moon<\/i> (Shearsman 2013).
