{"id":7904,"date":"2022-12-01T12:55:30","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T12:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/glasfrynproject.org.uk\/w\/?p=7904"},"modified":"2025-05-20T07:33:37","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T07:33:37","slug":"lloyd-robson-from-powhatan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glasfrynproject.org.uk\/w\/7904\/lloyd-robson-from-powhatan\/","title":{"rendered":"Lloyd Robson: from &#8216;Powhatan&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lloyd Robson introduction:<\/p>\n<p>Chris Torrance and his poetry have had a significant influence on me.<br \/>\nback in the 1990s i regularly attended his \u2018Adventures in Creative Writing\u2019 class at the University of Wales, Cardiff. it was an evening class, mostly for locals. sometimes Chris would crash at my place, afterwards; and i would visit him, up in the Neath Valley. we spent many hours talking, reading out loud, worrying the bones of poetry, and trying to find a precision of thought through language, while also having a laugh.<br \/>\nChris was very generous with his time, his consideration, his knowledge, and imagination. his input was intrinsic to the developmental leap my writing went through at that time, but he never tried to influence me to write like him, however much i enjoyed his poetry. he did, however, introduce me to several other poets whose opinions i still trust to this day. he was a good judge of writers\u2019 intentions.<br \/>\nah, Chris: you Ezra Pound of Pontneddfechan, you Charles Olson of Ystradfellte, you Ginsberg of Glynmercher Isaf; a library of a man; a considered thinker and speaker; a magnificent teacher and poet; a rarity, and inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>i haven\u2019t written a \u2018proper\u2019 poem in several years \u2013 bits and bobs and rough drafts but nothing that was given the full treatment. after i\u2019d absorbed the news of Chris\u2019 death i thought, \u201cwell if i can\u2019t put in some proper effort, in his hono(u)r, then i really should go fuck myself.\u201d<br \/>\nso here it is \u2013 or the start of it, anyway. it\u2019s shaping up to be a poem of place (specifically, my current \u2018home\u2019 on Powhatan Avenue, between the Elizabeth and Lafayette Rivers). the poem is still a work in progress and i expect it to be significantly longer when it\u2019s done \u2013 there\u2019s still a lot of territory to cover. i aim to include geology, history, lore, and language \u2013 all elements that interested Chris, and appeared in his poetry. would he have liked this poem? dunno, but he would\u2019ve encouraged me, regardless.<\/p>\n<p>my knowledge of local, native languages is nonexistent. my research is still ongoing. if my use of these words is in any way offensive, inappropriate, disrespectful, or downright inaccurate, please let me know. no harm intended.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">To Read the Poem:\u00a0<a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/glasfrynproject.org.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/lloyd-robson-POEM-\u00a9.pdf\">from &#8216;Powhatan&#8217;<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">lloyd robson is a Welsh poet, prose writer, text artist, journalist, and broadcaster, but most of the time he ain\u2019t. he is responsible for the books <em>city&amp;poems<\/em> (blackhat, Cardiff, 1994), <em>edge territory<\/em> (blackhat, Cardiff, 1995), <em>letter from sissi<\/em> (blackhat, Cardiff, 1997), <em>cardiff cut<\/em> (Parthian, Cardigan, 2001), bbboing! <em>&amp; associated weirdness <\/em>(Parthian, Cardigan, 2003), and <em>Oh Dad!
