Chris Torrance)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">Not<\/span><br \/>\nfar from here<br \/>\nin the last dark place in Wales<br \/>\nthey killed<br \/>\nthe last wolf.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">Ice<\/span><br \/>\nwas everywhere.<br \/>\nA glacier\u2019s gimlet<br \/>\nand its moraines<br \/>\nstill visible.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">Yet<\/span><br \/>\nin this corner of the sky<br \/>\nstars are feral<br \/>\nand air teems with myths,<br \/>\ntheir tapestries lit against military megaliths.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">Above<\/span><br \/>\nus behind us and sometimes below<br \/>\nlie the crooked anvil<br \/>\nthe road of spilt milk<br \/>\nthe waterfall\u2019s blizzard.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">Least<\/span><br \/>\nof our rivers is Llia<br \/>\nyet beyond us<br \/>\nconstellations converge and creatures<br \/>\ncontort across the sky atlas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin-left: 10px;\">But<\/span><br \/>\nas night creeps<br \/>\nout of Maen Llia\u2019s shadow<br \/>\ndaylight despite its sacrifice<br \/>\nwill be restored.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><u>ORDNANCE SURVEY <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><u>GRID REFGERENCE SN92651660 &#8211; \u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><u>AFON LLIA.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recall driving Chris Torrance to Llandrindod Wells for one of the first meetings of the old \u2018Welsh Union of Writers\u2019. There were other people in the vehicle but I found Torrance largely incommunicative. And as so many writers do, he proved an unlikely union member.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe to create conversation I might have told him a few years earlier I had sought out his \u2018Acrospirical Meanderings in a Tongue of the Time\u2019. But frankly we didn\u2019t speak much. Now I think he might have been shy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decades later I learned of the appearance of Torrance\u2019s \u2018complete\u2019 \u2018The Magic Door\u2019, and purchased a copy. Dipping into this I discovered references to the Afon Llia, a small river \u2018wholly contained with the Brecon Beacons National Park\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This \u2018least river\u2019 runs close to Ystradfellte, the turning to which on the A4059 I always note when visiting my daughter and her family in Cwm Bach, near Glasbury on Wye.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With my grandchildren I\u2019ve recently revisited the Ystradfellte waterfalls, referenced in the poem \u2018Llia\u2019, along with \u2018the last wolf\u2019, starlight and darkness \u2013 references to a recent Seren Books publication on astronomy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I may also have told Chris Torrance that my twin sister, Carol, visited him (with Nigel Jenkins) at Glynmercher Isaf. Maybe the last time I communicated with Chris was to apologise for a Friends of the Earth Cymru forced cancellation of a reading of his.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish this tribute to Chris Torrance well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RM 1.11.22<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Robert Minhinnick lives in Porthcawl.
