{"id":769,"date":"2011-06-25T08:25:26","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T08:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glasfrynproject.org.uk\/w\/?p=769"},"modified":"2025-05-20T07:29:02","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T07:29:02","slug":"frances-presley-hazel-eardley-wilmot-a-search-for-origins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glasfrynproject.org.uk\/w\/769\/frances-presley-hazel-eardley-wilmot-a-search-for-origins\/","title":{"rendered":"FRANCES PRESLEY: Hazel Eardley-Wilmot: a search for origins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Hazel Eardley-Wilmot: a search for origins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I first became interested in Hazel Eardley-Wilmot when I came across <em>Ancient Exmoor <\/em>in Minehead public library.\u00a0 I was intrigued by her description of the Neolithic stones on Exmoor, especially the unique \u2018stone settings\u2019 in their extraordinary geometric patterns:\u00a0\u2018Quite different from either the long rows or the circles are the small stone settings, Exmoor\u2019s special puzzle. Nearly thirty are known, but none are understood\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, as I continued my research, I realised that I was attracted as much by the quality of Eardley-Wilmot\u2019s writing as by the subject matter.\u00a0 There are other books on the archaeology of Exmoor, and some more professional and scientific, but none were as well written as hers in terms of literary style, as well as reference to literature, etymology, and the classics.\u00a0 In the preface to <em>Ancient Exmoor<\/em> she describes herself as an Oxford graduate in English, who does not claim to be more than a serious amateur archaeologist, with a variety of experience in other professions, both in England and abroad, and \u2018some acquaintance with the vagaries of language\u2019.\u00a0 She had spent nearly fifty years gradually becoming familiar with the moor.<\/p>\n<p>In a collaborative writing project with the poet Tilla Brading, I have explored Neolithic sites and spoken to archaeologists, some of whom remembered Hazel Eardley-Wilmot, and a larger than life character began to emerge.\u00a0 There were even rumours that she had been a spy during WW2!\u00a0 We learnt that she would boldly go out waving her stick while you followed in her wake \u2013 this was the famous walking stick with a six inch nail used to prod for stones.\u00a0 It was two or three years after beginning our research that we made contact with Hugh Thomas, Eardley-Wilmot\u2019s friend and literary executor, and discovered what a wonderful archive exists of her papers and artefacts.\u00a0 Some of these are held at the Thomas\u2019 house, while the bulk of the papers she considered important are held by Oxford University, mainly at her old college of St Anne\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1910, Eardley-Wilmot went to St Anne\u2019s in 1928.\u00a0 Looking through her papers, I was very surprised to discover that there were three unpublished books, all dating from the late 1940s. I hadn\u2019t known how serious she was, when young, about becoming a novelist, and how much she achieved in a burst of energy and writing, which all relates to her six years work with the Czechs for the British Council.\u00a0 The books consist of <em>The Broken Curve,<\/em> an historical memoir of post-war Prague before the Communist take over in 1948; a satirical novel, <em>Coffin\u2019s Burden<\/em>, about Britain\u2019s cultural ambassadors abroad; and\u00a0 <em>Thursday\u2019s Child or The Traveller,<\/em> an allegory of the state of Europe in the mid-twentieth century, and the heroine\u2019s (her) attempt to find a place within it. All three books represent a creative, dynamic phase in her life when she was at the centre of European politics and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Set in the fictional country of Missaloonia, <em>Coffin\u2019s Burden <\/em>satirises the neo-colonial attitudes of many in the British Council, while the heroine, Kate, fosters close relations with the local artists and intellectuals, incurring the wrath of her superiors.\u00a0 There is a portrait by a Czech artist of Eardley-Wilmot holding a phone, and in <em>Coffin\u2019s Burden <\/em>the Council staff are constantly on the phone, while Kate and her journalist boyfriend are aware that their phones may be tapped.\u00a0 The head of the British Council, the eponymous Coffin is notable for his colonial attitudes, as well as his obsession with rigid method and linguistic pedantry: he disapproves of his underlings\u2019 use of the colloquial.\u00a0 The Irish consul fears that Coffin will drive Missaloonia into Communism.\u00a0 Eardley-Wilmot parodies the Council\u2019s promotion of a simplistic (upper class) view of the English countryside as representative of English culture in general: \u2018the happy simplicity of the English countryside\u201d.\u00a0 The natives are encouraged to make daisy chains, sing \u2018Here we go gathering nuts in May\u2019, and watch films about sweet baby lambs.\u00a0 On the other hand, she also mocks the socialist lecturer who talks about the People and \u2018the enclosure of the common\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thursday\u2019s Child<\/em> seems to have been the most ambitious of the three books, and the one that mattered most to her.\u00a0 It is a re-working of the <em>Odyssey<\/em>, in which the heroine, Rosalind, travels down a river \u2013 the central metaphor of the novel:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The river had flowed a long way from its source in the unfrequented hills, before it came to the town of Duality and was ignored\u2026 The river served only to divide the town: there was one bridge, but it was hardly ever used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p><em> Thursday\u2019s Child<\/em> also made me think of <em>Pilgrim\u2019s Progress<\/em>, for its moral concerns, if not its theology, and of Albert Camus\u2019 great war-time novel of the city, <em>La Peste<\/em>. Wars take place between people on both sides of the long meandering river, and attempts to unite them seem doomed to failure.\u00a0 After a terrible storm, in which many people are killed, Rosalind is marooned on an island, and then, finally, rescued by her childhood friend, Sylvia, the farmer of Whitelands.<\/p>\n<p>I get the impression that when Eardley-Wilmot failed to get published, and had to earn her living, first as a teacher, then as an education officer, she lost faith in her future as a professional writer. \u00a0I wonder whether she was also unsure how to situate herself in the post-war political landscape of this country. She had witnessed the ruthless battles of fascists and communists in Europe, and the extinguishing of freedom in Prague with the Communist coup d\u2019\u00e9tat.\u00a0 She had become deeply involved in Czech politics and seen the terrible fate of Jan Masaryk.\u00a0 In her journal of 1947 she writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Drained now by two days in which it has been impossible for me to think or feel anything but this \u2013 his own suffering, and this for Anna and for all Czechs and how it is for the whole human predicament.\u00a0 His longing for one human world \u2013 still trying for that, for some vestige of freedom for his own people, till five minutes past the hour \u2013 then no hope of either \u2013 the world irrevocably split.<\/p>\n<p>Eardley-Wilmot was eventually to enter a new phase of creativity and reinvent herself as the author of books on Exmoor\u2019s history.\u00a0 One of the continuities, between the two most creative phases of her life, is her love of nature.\u00a0 I think it must have been shortly after leaving Oxford in 1931 that she spent some time as a governess in South America.\u00a0 She was a keen horse rider and enjoyed life on the pampas.\u00a0 She was also perhaps influenced by the novelist and naturalist W. H. Hudson, who grew up in South America, and whose work she admired.\u00a0 We know about the South American connection from a photo album in the Thomas\u2019 archive, and from articles she wrote under the pen name Anne Marow.<\/p>\n<p>More significantly much of her writing in the late 1940s was done while she was staying on Exmoor. There is an attention to the natural world in <em>Thursday\u2019s Child,<\/em> and the heroine\u2019s childhood is spent in a rural landscape, near the source of the river.\u00a0 She has an intimate knowledge of flora and fauna:\u00a0\u2018She would look for the tiny grey-green trumpet of lichen, with its scarlet drum-knob of flower, a sentry motionless at his post on the boulder of live quartz.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However the heroine, Rosalind, like Eardley-Wilmot, is drawn to the city \u2013 first the City of Fair Learning (clearly meant to be Oxford) and then to the city of Duality, which is divided between the haves and the have-nots.\u00a0 Eardley-Wilmot lived both in Prague and London, but ultimately returned, as Rosalind does, to the country.\u00a0 She writes in her journal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(Rosalind) should draw on this country continuity &#8211; piercing quietly through to it wherever she is\u2026\u2019, and, \u2018trees \u2013 here \u2013 in Czia \u2013 this intense feeling of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">life<\/span> of each tree, stronger in winter than in summer \u2013 the sense of vitality in pause.<\/p>\n<p>Like other pioneering women writers of the last century, such as Virginia Woolf and Dorothy Richardson, Eardley-Wilmot reaffirmed her sense of self through an intense and joyful affinity with the natural world. \u00a0Eardley-Wilmot knew and admired the work of Virginia Woolf and she corresponded with E.M. Forster.\u00a0 Her closest literary friendship was with the politically engaged and successful novelist Storm Jameson, with whom she had a long and warm correspondence from the 1940s onwards.\u00a0 She may not have read Dorothy Richardson who had sunk into obscurity by the 1940s, and she did not pursue \u2018stream of consciousness\u2019 or other more experimental modes of writing.\u00a0 Yet she shares with Woolf and Richardson a desire to explore the female consciousness discovering itself in \u2018a rapturous and animistic compact with the natural world\u2019, to quote Carol Watts\u2019 study of Richardson.<\/p>\n<p>There is an absence in Eardley-Wilmot\u2019s work of religious doctrine, which may have been partly due to her education, and also, perhaps in reaction to her father, who was a vicar. Nor is she tempted, as many others were, by mysticism. As she writes in the crucial chapter from <em>Thursday\u2019s Child, <\/em>when Rosalind is alone on the island, with the world on the verge of total war, and the risk of a barren planet:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If this was mere human resilience, said the soul, was that so \u2018mere\u2019?\u00a0 And to disparage this obstinate resurgence as animal \u2026 what hubris was that?\u00a0 Rosalind could not feel so separate from animal or bird, flower or tree.<\/p>\n<p>And later:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">She sank to her knees and bowed.\u00a0 To what?\u00a0 She could not have said; but for the glimpse into a depth past sounding, in reverence simple and undivided, there was no other position possible.<\/p>\n<p>This is the closest she can come to prayer, to a \u2018depth past sounding\u2019, which is \u2018merely\u2019 the depth of human, and natural, history.<\/p>\n<p>Eardley-Wilmot retained her interest in humanity, and if she distanced herself from the crisis of twentieth century politics, she was still able to take a long view of society as an archaeologist.\u00a0 In her last book <em>Yesterday\u2019s Exmoor<\/em>, published in 1990, when she was 80, she also paid tribute to the community on Exmoor, where she finally made her home.\u00a0 Recently, with the help of Richard Westcott, we have interviewed friends and neighbours of Eardley-Wilmot in and around North Molton, who still have vivid and affectionate memories of her.\u00a0 Tilla Brading has used the interviews and the archive for a visual and text presentation called \u2018Indent\u2019.\u00a0 We are also collaborating on a series of grid poems, the first of which was hand-made for Dusie publications in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Eardley-Wilmot may have abandoned fiction, but her interest in language, and the \u2018vagaries of language\u2019, grew stronger over time.\u00a0 She was a keen linguist and etymologist, compiling a dictionary of Exmoor dialect words and exploring the significance of names, whether of settlements, trees or Neolithic longstones.\u00a0 Giles Goodland has transcribed her dialect dictionary and it will appear in the <em>Transactions of Devonshire Association<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Landscape is integral to <em>Yesterday\u2019s Exmoor<\/em>, and the theme of trees also recurs in an article on tree names, \u2018Oak, ash and thorn\u2019 (1984):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Exmoor was such a wild wind-swept waste that a single tree was a notable landmark;
