It shows a strip of unnamed sheet music headed with the phrase \u2018As if drawing from the grey sea\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u2018As if drawing from the grey sea\u2019 is a fragment from the Greek lyric poet Alcaeus.\u00a0This phrase drew my attention to the etymology of the verb \u2018draw\u2019. From the Germanic for \u2018drag\u2019, it\u00a0originally meant \u2018to pull\u2019\u00a0and was\u00a0only later associated with making marks on paper.\u00a0To draw is to draw out or\u00a0draw forth, like drawing water.<\/p>\n<p>To draw water, you use a container such as a bucket in order to contain the water.
